From November 16 to November 19, several blocks in the downtown Austin area will be closed in order to feature the highly anticipated Formula One weekend. Two separate festivals that were planned for that time will now be combined by organizers in order to lessen the amount of block closures.

Experience Austin and Austin Fan Fest will take place between the Warehouse District and East Second Street. Before merging these two festivals, 28 blocks of the downtown area were supposed to be closed during this weekend where thousands of race fans are expected to gather. Several business owners and residents of Austin voiced concerns about this large number, raising questions about business profits and the high amount of traffic that could result.

Instead of 28 blocks closing, now only 11 will be closing in order to hold the activities that are planned for the Formula One weekend. Despite the decline, the amount of traffic is expected to be high, and the possibility of car accidents will indeed increase. Austin Fan Fest will be free to the public, and will feature different interactive areas with music, food, and drinks. Local musicians will perform for free throughout the weekend, and there will also be several bands headlining at venues all over the city.

BMX racing legend Kyle Bennett, 33, died over the weekend in a tragic single car accident.

Bennett began his BMX career in 1999, winning the International Cycling Union world championship three times, most recently in 2007. He was also a three-time National Bicycle League champion and was the first person to qualify for the US Olympic BMX team when the sport became an event in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He was a favorite for the gold medal until he dislocated his shoulder in one of his heats.

Kyle Bennett, often described as a pioneer for BMX racing, was found dead Sunday near his home in Conroe after driving his Toyota Tundra off the road and into a wrought iron gate. Officials report that Bennett was not wearing his seatbelt and died after being flung from the vehicle. He is survived by a fiance and young daughter.

Bennett dreamed of increasing the popularity of BMX racing and wanted to one day open a center for where children could learn the ins and outs of BMX cycling. The BMX community as well as his hometown racetrack, Armadillo BMX Park, are raising funds for his memorial service.

A man has been arrested for his involvement in a car accident that occurred in Austin on Wednesday.

Allegedly, the man ran a red light and crashed into another car. Once he regained his senses, he opened the door to his car, and witnesses report seeing beer cans spill out onto the road as he fled the scene.

The man was driving with his wife, who is pregnant with their tenth child. He is being charged with failure to stop and render aid.

A bicycle rider was injured in a car accident that occurred in Waco on Sunday night.

According to police officials, the accident occurred at the intersection of Valley Mills Drive and Waco West Drive when a 20-year-old man was traveling on his bicycle and he collided with a car.

The man sustained serious injuries and was transported to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in order to be treated. Officials at the hospital stated that he was treated in the emergency room and later released.

Last week, a fatal car accident occurred in Grimes County on Texas Highway 105.

The accident occurred on Sunday at about 5 p.m. and involved three vehicles.  The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that a Ford sedan traveling westbound on the highway caused the accident by crossing over the center lanes into oncoming traffic.

The sedan crashed head-on into a Fort pickup truck traveling eastbound.  The truck was pushed into the westbound lanes of the highway and crashed into an SUV, which flipped.

The driver of the pickup truck, 56, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  Paramedics took the 49-year old driver of the SUV to a hospital in Houston where he was listed as being in critical condition.

Last month, a Waco woman was severely injured in a pedestrian accident.  The woman, 53-year old Frankie Hudson, was jogging down 25th street when the accident occurred.

According to police reports, Hudson was on the side of N. 25th Street and attempted to cross over onto Trice Avenue when a 2001 Chevrolet Impala struck her.  The Chevrolet was driven by 31-year old Stephanie Thompson, also of Waco.

Police and paramedics responded to witness calls about the accident and transported Hudson Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center.  Police said that Hudson was admitted to the hospital with severe injuries, but they did not specify what type or her condition.

A two-vehicle accident on Interstate 35W last month caused by a drunk driver left two Austinites dead.  According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 36-year old Brian Jesus Marquez was traveling south near Itasca when he drifted into the shoulder of the highway.  Marquez then over-corrected and crossed the highway’s center median into oncoming northbound traffic.

Marquez’s Nissan Armada collided head-on with a a 2007 Dodge Caliber traveling northbound.  The driver of the Dodge, 33-year old Bradley Kyle Schroeder, and the vehicle’s passenger, 26-year old Chase Monks, were both musicians out of Austin.  Officials pronounced both men dead at the scene of the accident.

This past Saturday, a Carrollton man was killed in a tragic wrong-way car accident on Airport Freeway in Hurst.  The man who caused the accident, 22-year old Eric Supe, was arrested and is being charged with intoxication manslaughter.

The accident occurred just after 5 AM Saturday morning in the westbound lanes of Texas 121, or Airport Freeway.  Supe was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes when he crashed into a 2004 Kia Spectre driven by 32-year old Ricardo Magallon of Carrollton.  Magallon was airlifted to the Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth where he later passed away at 8:49 AM.

Magallon was driving to his construction job in Bridgeport.  Hurst Police are now awaiting the results of Supe’s blood test.

Last Month, Jennifer Johnson filed suit against Marshall Saltzman, Chucky’s Trucking Co. Inc. and Acme Truck Line in the Eastern District of Texas after one of their employees failed to yield and crashed a company tractor-trailer into her pickup truck.

The accident occurred in July outside of Nacogdoches on US 59.  Johnson was hit in her Ford F150 pickup truck when a tractor-trailer changed lanes and turned into the path of her vehicle.

Charges in the accident include failure to yield, failure to brake to avoid a collision, turning unsafely, reckless driving, failure to drive in a single lane and failure to keep a proper lookout.
